Production & Heritage

Cutwater Spirits was founded in San Diego by Yuseff Cherney, the master distiller who originally built Ballast Point Brewing’s spirits program. Unlike most ready-to-drink brands that source neutral grain spirit from contract distillers, Cutwater distills its base vodka on-site at its San Diego facility from 100% corn, running it through six distillation passes and carbon filtration before blending. The Banana Mudslide combines that house-distilled vodka with proprietary coffee cream liqueur and banana liqueur, then blends and cans the finished cocktail in the same production facility — a vertically integrated process that remains uncommon in the RTD category.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Ripe banana leads immediately, followed by a milky sweetness and faint cocoa undertone. A light vanilla quality rounds out the nose.

Taste: The entry is all banana cream — sweet and notably smooth for a canned cocktail. At mid-palate, coffee and chocolate notes from the mudslide base push through and temper the fruit sweetness. The balance between the banana and mocha elements is well-calibrated, avoiding the cloying one-note quality common in cream-based RTDs.

Finish: Medium length with lingering banana and a mocha-like fade. The sweetness tapers cleanly rather than clings, helped by the clean corn-vodka backbone.
