Sweet and nutty, with a sort of oatmeal character on the nose, it’s got an initial pungency that feels slightly more aggressive than the typical Irish, with hints of dried pineapple adding nuance. The palate retreats to traditional elements, with notes of sesame, sweet cereal, and toasted bread dominant. A touch of toasted coconut and a slight winey element can be detected, the latter perhaps driven by the “touch of sherry” in the mix. Drying and rather green on the finish, the short conclusion leaves a bit to be desired, though it’s never unpleasant or off-putting.

Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition Irish Whiskey is a collaboration between the distillery and nearby brewery Franciscan Well. Barrels that had been previously used for Jameson whiskey were taken to the Franciscan Well Brewery to use in the aging of their full-bodied craft stout. Once used for beer maturation, they were sent back to the distillery where Jameson whiskey that had already been aged was filled into them for a finishing period. A unique offering from Jameson with rich stout characteristics of coffee, cocoa, and a hint of hops. The nose has an initial aroma of freshly cut hay complemented by a crisp orchard fruit character – green apples and pears, with a twist of lime zest. Mild pot still spices appear, deepening from green tea to hazelnut and milk chocolate. The initial sweet mouth coating typical of the Irish pot still inclusion is quickly complemented by the subtle touch of hops and cocoa beans from the beer cask finish. Caskmates has been aged in Jameson barrels that were used to finish Franciscan Well stout. The finish is long and sweet with milk chocolate and butterscotch. Enjoy!
