SMOOTH AMBLER CONTRADICTION At Smooth Ambler, after we began merchant bottling the whiskey we call Old Scout, it occurred to us that at some point it may be fun and interesting to blend a little of the delicious bourbon we source with the smooth and sweet wheated bourbon we distill here in West Virginia. With that notion in mind, Contradiction was born; a blend of whiskey we make with whiskey we do not. Contradiction is non-chill filtered and is full-bodied, with notes of dried fruit and butter rum, and has the end-result of tasting like a four-grain bourbon. Mashbill: Merchant bottled bourbon made with corn, rye and malted barley married with homemade bourbon made with corn, wheat and malted barley. Distillation Process: Continuous column distillation and pot distillation. Aging: A blend of different straight whiskeys, there are different ages represented in Contradiction. The majority whiskey is more than 9 years in age. Source of grains: Grains from a variety of sources. Annual Production: Around 50,000 bottles. Tasting Notes: Full of oak, dried cherries, vanilla, and cinnamon creating a signature mature bourbon nose. Sweet from the wheat and spice from the rye and a bit of leather round out the palate. Its viscosity creates a smooth and pleasant finish. Angel’s Envy is an exceptional award-winning Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey finished in Port Wine Barrels and inspired by Lincoln Henderson’s lifetime spent crafting the world’s finest spirits. It’s a total return to craft first, hand-blended batches of 8 to 12 barrels at a time, which they carefully taste throughout every step of the process. This would be enough for other bourbons, but they decided to take it further. A small-batch, super-premium Bourbon, Angel’s Envy, is aged for four to six years in white oak before finishing in Port barrels for an incremental five to six months. Once it’s deemed ready, they finish the bourbon in ruby port wine casks, which adds subtly distinct flavor nuances that enhance the whiskey without challenging it. They use 60-gallon ruby port barrels made from French oak and imported directly from Portugal. This creates a whiskey of unprecedented smoothness, sweetness and balance. Angel’s Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey has gold color laced with reddish amber hues, nearly copper in tone. It offers notes of subtle vanilla, raisins, maple syrup and toasted nuts on the nose. It has vanilla, ripe fruit, maple syrup, toast and bitter chocolate on the palate. It gives finish that is clean and lingering sweetness with a hint of Madeira that slowly fades. It’s easy to see why this bourbon brought Master Distiller Lincoln Henderson out of retirement.
